SCIENCE SIMULATIONS

The Metabolism and Evolution Science Simulations bring complex scientific experimentation to life for middle school students. These immersive experiences spark curiosity and deepen understanding in ways that go beyond the physical classroom.

Developed in collaboration with experts at the Lawrence Hall of Science, and featured in Fast Company, these Amplify Science simulations empower students to explore, test, and discover like real scientists.

Body and Food

Metabolism Simulation explores how different types of food break down into molecules, and are processed by the body.

Students begin setting up their simulation by adjusting attributes of the body such as activity level, and energy needs. They can choose different food sources, as well as the body’s rate of consumption. They can even create new foods to customize the ratio of protein to starch being consumed. Students can then see how foods are broken down and processed by the body's various systems.

Systems

Students can focus on how their choices affect different systems–digestive, circulatory, respiratory, stored glucose and cell production–in the body. This leads to a better understanding of how to maintain optimal energy and good health.

Data Visualization

The body's reaction to the student inputs is visualized in a graph that updates in real-time, so students can track and analyze the impact of their choices on the body's health and performance.

Environment

Students begin setting up their simulation by adjusting the environmental conditions of the habitat including temperature, water density, and color. Certain characteristics can prove to be more or less beneficial to the survival of different species.

Traits

Students can adjust the trait settings of each animal, such as speed, and physical appearance. Once they have populated their habitat, they can see their simulation unfold in real-time, and observe the impact of their choices. Students can click on an animal to see its features evolve, and learn how an animal's environment and traits impact its survival.

Data Visualization

Along with these unique customization tools, students can see real-time tracking and data visualizations related to the animal populations and their environment. By observing their experiment and monitoring the data, students can see the impact of their initial settings, and analyze how a species might either evolve to survive or become extinct.
